Plan Your Papua Expedition
Complete Preparation Guide
Everything you need to know — from visa requirements to what lens to pack — for the world’s most extraordinary wildlife expedition.
Planning Your Papua Expedition: Complete Guide
A Papua Bird of Paradise expedition requires thoughtful preparation — West Papua is one of the world’s more logistically complex destinations, but the reward is access to wildlife encounters and natural environments that simply cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. This guide covers everything you need to know to prepare for your expedition, from the visa application to what to pack in your dive bag.
Visa & Entry Requirements
Most nationalities can enter Indonesia on a Visa on Arrival (VoA) — USD 35, available at Sorong Airport. The VoA allows a 30-day stay, extendable once for 30 additional days at the local immigration office. Citizens of several countries are eligible for visa-free entry. Papua Bird of Paradise provides full visa guidance during your pre-trip briefing.
Important: West Papua is a Special Autonomy region and some areas require a Surat Jalan (travel letter) obtainable from the local police. Papua Bird of Paradise handles all Surat Jalan paperwork for expeditions venturing beyond standard tourist zones.
Getting There: Flights to Sorong
All liveaboard expeditions depart from Sorong (SOQ). Flights connect to:
- Bali (DPS) → Makassar (UPG) → Sorong — Garuda, Batik Air, Lion Air — total 4–6 hours
- Jakarta (CGK) → Sorong — direct options via Garuda — 4 hours
- Manado (MDC) → Sorong — for itineraries starting from North Sulawesi
We recommend arriving in Sorong the day before embarkation and staying overnight at our partner hotel — Papua Bird of Paradise coordinates this seamlessly.
Health & Medical Requirements
Travel insurance including emergency medical evacuation is mandatory for all expedition participants. Recommended vaccinations include hepatitis A/B, typhoid, and ensuring tetanus is current — consult your travel health clinic. Malaria prophylaxis is recommended for most Papua itineraries; consult your physician 4–6 weeks before travel. Divers must be medically fit to dive — if in doubt, obtain a dive medical certificate before departure.

Some liveaboards have satellite WiFi for messaging.
Fitness Requirements
Bird of Paradise forest walks involve pre-dawn starts (4:30–5:00 AM), forest trekking on uneven ground, and sometimes 30–45 minute uphill walks to lek sites. Moderate fitness is required. Diving requires swimming competency. If you have any concerns about physical requirements, please discuss these with us during your pre-trip consultation — we can tailor itineraries to match fitness levels.

Visa and Entry Requirements for Papua
Most international visitors to Papua enter Indonesia under the Indonesian Visa on Arrival policy, which is available to citizens of many countries and grants 30-day stays extendable to 60 days. Citizens of certain countries may require advance visa applications through Indonesian embassies. Our team can advise on current visa requirements based on your nationality and travel plans.
Visiting West Papua province (which includes Raja Ampat) and Papua province requires no special permit beyond standard Indonesian entry for most tourists. Remote highland areas and some protected zones require a Surat Jalan (travel letter) obtainable from local police — our logistics team handles this for all our guests as part of the standard tour package.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need vaccinations to visit Papua?
We recommend consulting your travel medicine specialist or GP before visiting Papua. Commonly recommended vaccinations include Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid, and Tetanus. Malaria prophylaxis is strongly recommended for most Papua destinations — specific medication recommendations depend on the areas visited and your personal health history. Yellow Fever vaccination may be required if travelling from a Yellow Fever endemic country.
What currency is used in Papua?
Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) is the national currency. Cash is essential in rural areas as card payment infrastructure is limited outside major towns. ATMs are available in Sorong, Manokwari, and Jayapura but may not always accept international cards. Our tour packages include full transparency on expected cash requirements at each destination.
What is the time zone in Papua?
West Papua (including Raja Ampat) uses WIT (Waktu Indonesia Timur) — Eastern Indonesia Time, UTC+9. Papua province (eastern) uses the same time zone. Indonesia spans three time zones total; Papua is the easternmost at UTC+9.
How should I prepare physically for a Papua trip?
General cardiovascular fitness is beneficial for all Papua tours, particularly those involving forest treks. For highland birding tours, we recommend building aerobic endurance through regular walking or hiking in the months before travel. Our team can provide specific fitness recommendations based on your chosen itinerary.
