Why Choose a Raja Ampat Liveaboard?

Raja Ampat is unequivocally the greatest marine biodiversity hotspot on Earth. Scientists have recorded more species in these waters than anywhere else — 75% of all known coral species, over 1,500 fish species, and marine megafauna that includes manta rays, whale sharks, pygmy seahorses, and walking sharks found nowhere else. A liveaboard vessel is the only way to access the full breadth of this archipelago’s 1,500 islands, unlock remote dive sites impossible to reach from shore, and combine underwater exploration with morning Bird of Paradise excursions in the island forests.

Unlike land-based resorts — which are restricted to day trips — a liveaboard positions you directly at the world’s best dive sites overnight, enabling pre-dawn dives when fish aggregations are densest and predators most active. Combined with morning forest walks for Wilson’s and Red Birds of Paradise on Waigeo Island, a Raja Ampat liveaboard expedition offers the single most extraordinary nature immersion experience available anywhere on the planet.

Papua Bird of Paradise operates dedicated liveaboard expeditions aboard carefully selected vessels crewed by expert dive guides and ornithologist birding specialists. Every itinerary is crafted to balance underwater and terrestrial wildlife encounters, cultural village visits, and pristine natural scenery.

What Makes Our Liveaboards Different

Most Raja Ampat liveaboards focus exclusively on diving. Ours are purpose-built dual expeditions — each itinerary includes dedicated Bird of Paradise dawn watches at active lek sites alongside world-class dive days. You’ll dive Misool’s technicolor coral gardens in the morning and hear Wilson’s Bird of Paradise calling from the forest at sunrise — experiences that no single-discipline operator can offer.

Our partnerships with indigenous ranger communities on Waigeo and Batanta islands ensure that every forest excursion contributes directly to Bird of Paradise habitat conservation, and our guides include specialists with decades of experience interpreting both underwater and forest wildlife.

Our Liveaboard Fleet

We partner with Raja Ampat’s finest liveaboard operators — vessels selected for safety certification, environmental standards, crew expertise, and guest comfort. All partner vessels hold current CMAS/PADI operator certification and comply with Raja Ampat Marine Park regulations.

Cape Kri
5–27m | All levels

Boo Windows

Practical Information

Best Season for Raja Ampat Liveaboard

Raja Ampat has two distinct seasons with different optimal zones. October to April brings calm seas and excellent visibility (20–30m+) in the northern islands — Waigeo, Gam, Batanta — making this the prime season for the classic northern circuit. May to September has stronger currents in the north (favouring experienced divers) but calmer conditions in the south around Misool. Bird of Paradise birding is optimal April through August when males are most actively displaying.

The “shoulder” months of October-November and April-May are optimal for experienced divers seeking both calm conditions and active Bird of Paradise displays — perfectly combining the two headline attractions.

How to Get to Sorong

All liveaboards depart from Sorong (SOQ), West Papua’s main gateway city. Sorong is connected to Bali (DPS) via Makassar (UPG) with Garuda, Batik Air, or Lion Air — total journey 4–6 hours. Direct flights from Jakarta (CGK) are also available. Papua Bird of Paradise coordinates all transfers including airport pickup, Sorong hotel night, and liveaboard embarkation.

Inclusions & Exclusions

All our liveaboard packages include: all meals aboard, unlimited dives with tanks and weights, snorkeling equipment, expert bilingual dive guides, Bird of Paradise forest excursion guide fees, national park entry fees, and 24-hour crew service. Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need dive certification to join a Raja Ampat liveaboard?
Yes, a minimum of Open Water (OW) certification is required for diving. However, non-diving guests are welcome aboard — snorkeling is exceptional in Raja Ampat and many Bird of Paradise sites require no diving at all. PADI Advanced Open Water is recommended for sites like Blue Magic and Magic Mountain.
Are Bird of Paradise experiences guaranteed?
Wilson’s Bird of Paradise has a 95%+ sighting success rate during April–August at our Waigeo lek sites. Red Bird of Paradise is similarly reliable. We use purpose-built hides at active lek sites monitored by community rangers, providing the best possible conditions for sightings.
What’s the minimum age for guests?
Children aged 10+ are welcome aboard as snorkelers. Diving is available from age 12 with junior certification. All ages must be able to swim confidently. We recommend vessels with private family cabins for families with young children.
How far in advance should I book?
Prime season departures (October–April, peak BoP season April–August) fill 6–12 months in advance. We strongly recommend booking at minimum 6 months ahead for specific dates. Last-minute availability does occasionally exist — contact us for current openings.
