Earth’s Most Extraordinary Places
From Raja Ampat’s world-record reefs to the Bird of Paradise forests of the Arfak Mountains — a complete guide to our expedition destinations.
Papua & Raja Ampat: World’s Most Extraordinary Destinations
West Papua encompasses some of Earth’s most pristine and biodiverse environments — from the coral triangle epicentre of Raja Ampat’s marine world to the mist-covered montane forests where Bird of Paradise males perform ancient courtship rituals. Our expeditions take you to destinations that few travellers ever experience, guided by specialists who have spent careers learning these remote landscapes.
Every destination in our portfolio was selected because it offers something genuinely exceptional — a species found nowhere else, a dive site that resets expectations for marine biodiversity, or a cultural encounter with communities maintaining traditions unchanged for generations. Below is our guide to the key destinations we operate in across West Papua.

Getting to Papua
All liveaboard expeditions depart from Sorong (SOQ), West Papua’s main gateway. Sorong connects to Bali (DPS) via Makassar (UPG) with Garuda Indonesia, Batik Air, or Lion Air — total journey 4–6 hours. Direct flights from Jakarta (CGK) are also available. Arfak Mountains and Cenderawasih expeditions depart from Manokwari (MKW), connected to Jakarta and Makassar.
Papua Bird of Paradise coordinates all in-country transfers including airport pickup, Sorong/Manokwari hotel night, and vessel embarkation — ensuring seamless arrival regardless of flight schedule.
Why Papua Is Different
Raja Ampat contains the highest marine biodiversity on Earth — scientists have documented over 1,400 fish species, 700 mollusc species, and 600+ coral species in a single archipelago. West Papua’s forests shelter 38 of the world’s 43 Bird of Paradise species, many found nowhere else. Unlike most wildlife destinations, these populations remain healthy and largely undisturbed, making encounters with species at their genuine natural density possible in a way that simply doesn’t exist elsewhere.
Conservation is central to everything we do. Papua Bird of Paradise contributes to community ranger programs, marine protected area monitoring, and Bird of Paradise lek conservation with the local communities on Waigeo and Batanta who serve as custodians of these extraordinary habitats. When you travel with us, you directly support the people who protect these ecosystems.

How to Choose Your Papua Destination
Papua encompasses an enormous geographic range — from the coral triangle seas of Raja Ampat in the west to the highland valleys of the central range to the vast lowland wetlands of the Trans-Fly region in the south. Each zone offers distinctly different wildlife, landscapes, and cultural experiences. The right destination for you depends on what you most want to see and how much time you have available.
Raja Ampat, in West Papua province, is the logical starting point for most first-time visitors: it combines world-class diving, exclusive bird of paradise species (Red and Wilson’s Birds of Paradise are found nowhere else), stunning island scenery, and relatively good infrastructure. The Arfak Mountains provide access to highland species including the Superb Bird of Paradise and numerous endemic songbirds. The Cyclops Mountains near Jayapura offer another highland birding zone. The Aru Islands in the south are the stronghold of the Greater Bird of Paradise.

How do I get to remote destinations in Papua?
Indonesia’s domestic aviation network connects major cities (Sorong, Manokwari, Wamena, Jayapura) to Bali, Jakarta, and Makassar. From these hubs, smaller charter flights, local ferry boats, and chartered 4WD vehicles reach remote areas. All our tour packages include full logistics coordination.
